General SEO Projects Status

I am currently up to my ears in SEO projects ranging from Dr. Joe Pearson's Sesame Elite Search package creation and setup, as well as SEO to his web site, to SEO updates on Dr. Kelly Mitchell's web site and Dr. Frank Grimaldi's web site and SES package.

I have quite a few projects waiting in the queue as well, like about 20 temporary web sites for orthodontists and dentists, to a couple virtual orthodontic graduate resumes, to some corporate RSS publishing and inhouse projects. There are also the orthodontic directory (http://www.find-orthodontists.com) and dental directory (http://www.find-dentists.com) to update and market.

Our Sesame Elite Search package is having great results and returns for our doctors. The ad campaigns have been extremely beneficial and successful in getting them some great visibility in the #1 and #2 spots for the top competitive keywords in the field (braces, invisalign, orthodontist).

AJAX: DOM based web applications

IBM developerWorks > Mastering AJAX, Part 6: Build DOM-based Web applications

Mix the DOM and JavaScript -- those perfect Ajax companions -- to change a Web page's user interface without page reloads

You'll develop a basic Web application with a user interface that
changes based on user actions -- of course, you'll use the DOM to
handle changing that interface.

MSN: Soapbox Beta

Microsoft has introduced their new Soapbox for sharing videos similar to Google Video. Again they are a bit behind in releasing things out on the market to compete with some of the other offerings already out there.

Right now you are only able to sign up for the limited access beta.

They have an interesting demo player clip on the http://soapbox.msn.com page of the MSN butterfly man dancing.

Google: Changes in URL Queries

Matt Cutts writes explaining changes in the way URL queries are returned. Previously a search for [www.ironvine.com] would return the same as [info:www.ironvine.com]. Now when you do a query with a URL [www.ironvine.com] you get results as if you had used ["www.ironvine.com"] as a text search.

This was done in order to make things easier on the casual users to help correct mis-spelled URLs. The expert users can still use [info:www.ironvine.com] to search site specificly. I find the change beneficial to see some of the linkbacks to my site and can still use the info: prepend to search site specific.

"We can always tweak/refine/revert if we see problems, but this
change is beneficial for many of our users, and expert users can still
get the old behavior by just prepending an “info:” to their url
queries."

Google: Webmaster Central

About Google Webmaster Tools
Google Webmaster Tools - Central

Getting Google’s view of your site, and diagnosing potential problems
The first step to increasing your site’s visibility on Google is learning how our robots crawl and index your site.

* Crawl info: You can make sure we have access to your site, and see when Googlebot last visited. You can also view URLs that we’ve had trouble crawling and why we couldn't crawl them. This way, you can fix any problems preventing us from indexing all of your pages.
* Robots.txt file validation: See if we’re having trouble with your file, and test out changes to that file before you change it on your server.
* Website content: View top content from your site and see the words that other sites use to link to it.

Seeing how your site performs
A second step is learning what drives traffic to your site.

* Top queries: Find the top queries that drive traffic to your site and where your site is included in the top search results. This will let you learn how users are finding your site.
* Indexing information: See how your site is indexed and which of your pages are included in the index. If we find violations in your site, we’ll give you the opportunity to fix the problems and request reinclusion of your site.

Sharing info with Google about your site
Since no one knows more about your site than you do, you can also share this info with Google and improve your crawlability.

* Submit a Sitemap file: Tell us all about your pages by submitting a Sitemap file; help us learn which pages are most important to you and how often those pages change.
* Specify your preferred domain: Tell us which URL to use when indexing your site; we’ll do our best to index the version you prefer.

Google: Tabs for Personalized Pages

Google has added the ability to create multiple tabbed pages on the personalized Google page. This is a great functionality and just another great addition to the completely dynamic user interface they have already developed.

If you have not tried using Google's personalized pages I encourage you to give it a shot. The easy way to start using it here is just to click on the link below to + Add to Google.

Add to Google

With the Google personalized pages you can create a completely customized user interface to which you can add your own feeds, tons of already created content to plug in, as well as weather, sports, and news from around the world. Try a Quote of the Day, or Your daily Dictionary Words. How about finding out what phase the moon is currently in? Try it and make the most out of Google. I especially like the drag and drop on the page, and between tabs!

Yahoo!: Local Tags, Collections & Photos

Your Local Tags, Collections & Photos

""September 14th, 2006

Are
you ready to shoot, tag, upload, and collect?  The latest Yahoo Local
features - released today - will allow our users to start organizing
their world in a whole new way.  Here’s how:

  • Everyone gets tags
    – well – maybe not everyone, but anyone who’s reading this blog.  We
think tagging is a great way for users to organize Local content for
    themselves, and for everyone else.
  • While tags may just say one word, pictures say a thousand words!
Now you can upload photos into any local content.  Show the world what
food you’re eating, or how good that plumber’s service really is.
  • If a picture says a thousand words, how many might a collection say?  Collections are groupings of anything you want….could be California Beach Towns…could be Seattle Sites and Sounds…could be Chicago’s Cuisine Scene.  We think this is going to be a great way for you get even more out of Yahoo! Local

Bringing it all together, a new “Dashboard” helps you get back to
saved ratings & reviews or collections.  The dashboard also gives
recommendations on places you might like based on your existing ratings
& reviews.""

This all sounds very interesting and a good idea, I can't help but wonder how badly being able to upload images to any local listing will be abused. I can just see a dentist getting images uploaded onto their Yahoo Local listing with a quote of "Look what they did to me!" and a picture of some hillbilly with 2 teeth left or something.

Maybe I am just misinterpreting how this all works, but it sounds like how it is intended. I do like the idea of the Tagging and images in general though.
