Google Plays by the Same Rules with AdWords

In this time of super heavy online marketing, it's all but natural for advertisers to point fingers everywhere calling foul play. Google has responded on its Inside AdWords blog about Google advertising on AdWords.

Following in the consistent statements about their products Google uses the same technology procedures and standards they offer to the public to promote themselves. They have certainly shown in practice that this is the case. You can find Google ads here and there on paid search, but they are by no means ranking themselves at the top just because they are the software authors.

AdWords for the Websiteless

Advertise online - even if you don't have a website

Google announced yesterday (December 6, 2006) on the AdWords blog that they have a new way to utilize AdWords -- give people without a website a place for their ad's to land!

Hosted business pages, a new feature for AdWords Starter Edition will let you create an hosted informational web page that will tell people more about your business. It looks like Google integrated their Page Creator with AdWords giving new advertisers the option to create an easy landing page.

While this is not for everyone, as most advertisers have or want their own custom website, it opens a whole new market for the small businesses such as local restaurants, flower shops and the like.

BusinessWeek Reports Yahoo Makeover

Makeover, overhaul, restructuring, take your pick. It sounds like Yahoo is shuffling the board to try and arrange its chess pieces in a more compact and structured way to defend against the Google onslaught.

According to the BusinessWeek article, Yahoo is going to focus its assets into 3 main categories. This situation comes by what they are calling weak and scattered ad management for paid search markets causing the company's profitability to suffer.

The overhaul, announced Tuesday night, represents Yahoo's mea culpa for meandering aimlessly during the past year, to the chagrin of investors and the delight of competitors like Google Inc. that lured away online traffic and advertisers.

Yahoo has fallen out of favor on Wall Street largely because Google -- the Internet's search leader -- has done a far better job of figuring out which ads are most likely to elicit clicks.

Yahoo has had quite a broad scope of products they have launched and run that mix and blend in their web sites, but they have not had a clear approach to how to arrange, market or implement these products for maximum effect for the brand. To go along with that several top executives have/will leave the company in the near future. Hopefully the restructuring fallout wont effect the employee base, as Yahoo maintains that it is still recruiting and hiring top talent for their work force.

Google Checkout Free Until the End of 2007

Why Google Checkout? Well, it's free for the next year!

Google has announced that from November 8, 2006 through December 31, 2007 they will process all Checkout transactions for free even if you are not an AdWords advertiser. This is a huge push from Google to get them in the online payment processing market and try to go head to head with PayPal.

As James Scott from ChannelAdvisor posted, this is very exciting news for online marketers and retailers, and a great chance to save overhead on processing fees. PayPal matched Google's last move, but can they survive free transactions for a year, which is their bread and butter? Google sure is swinging the big bat at them.

You can read the official release on the Google Checkout site here.

Let us hope these dates are correct, or this announcement from Google could have a very big financial and collateral impact on their Google Checkout program.
