SEO Benefits from Blogs
Came across a good post about the SEO benefits of blogs which has a lot of good reasoning behind why you should have or incorporate one into your personal or business site. Most of the things I agree with in here are sound principles, but there are a few opinions about how effective they are I would tend to argue.
Honestly most of the comments in the article are true, but it can depend on the site you are applying it to, or the content type. The responses to the article I agree with as well, there are definitely points you can argue.
Some of the reasons why you should use or create a blog include:
- Structured content - Blog software with category features allows the aggregation of content according to themes. This makes it easier to algorithmically categorize content. If you can make it easier for search engines to understand your content, you have a much better chance of ranking well on those topics.
- Crawlable URLs - Most blog software offers uncomplicated URL structure, making it fairly easy for search engine spiders to find and crawl blog content.
- Internal links - Blogs that post product or service related information can deep link anchor text to product information or purchase pages deep within the web site. This is very beneficial for ranking on long tail phrases.
- Inbound link magnet - One of the biggest benefits, blogs link freely to each other - much more than web sites do. Blogs are also a significant source of many posts to social news and social media web sites. Text, audio and video are all easily supported for syndication by blogs. The more media available, the more likely it will attract incoming links. Additionally, there are many widgets and plugins that make it easy to share blog content, thus encouraging links and traffic.
- RSS - Links to RSS feed urls that use the blog domain name will assist in building link popularity and when RSS content is syndicated or cited by other blogs, any embedded links will also assist in sending traffic.
- Fresh content - Both readers and search engines reward fresh content with repeat visits. From a search engine perspective, that means your site can be crawled more frequently, allowing your new content to become searchable more quickly. Fresh content is also indicative of a more authoritative web site.
- Active community - Comments and trackback features in blog software encourage interaction. An active blog community creates the kinds of citations or signals from other sites (annotated and contextually relevant links) that search engines tend to reward in the rankings. Loyal blog readers can boost a site’s visibility through advocacy on other blogs, in forums offline at conferences as well as on their own blogs and within the comments of your blog.
- Non-Search traffic - I think the greatest benefit of having an active blog has little to do with improving your search engine rankings though. The best thing about blogs is that they allow you to generate substantial amounts of traffic via RSS and links that have NOTHING to do with search engines. My recommendation to marketers in 2007 is to pursue traffic alternatives to search engines as aggressively as their budgets and marketing programs will allow. The result will be incremental increases in site traffic with search engine referred traffic an added bonus, if not correspondingly enhanced.
Have a read through the full article here. This is a pretty basic list of reasons why and how a blog can be beneficial to a site and promote your web traffic.

Trademarks as Keywords
A report over at SearchEngineWatch gives us the final "U.S. District Court ruling" word that you may use trademarks for paid search ads, but you cannot use the actual names in the ad text/copy that consumers will see.
Another note in the ruling is that it's ok to insert trademarks in your meta tags, which in my opinion is a useless gesture in any case if you have good quality content. Again you can't use trademarks in a place where consumers or visitors will see on your site either without proper permission.
Example: Pretend for a minute that Microsoft is the purchasing advertiser -
Using keyword: Apple
Google Ad (Bad):
keyword: Apple
Apple iPod vs Zune
Buy Zune instead of Apple iPod
At Microsoft.com
www.microsoft.com/zune
Google Ad (Good):
keyword: Apple
Microsoft Zune
Buy Zune MP3 Player
at Microsoft.com
www.microsoft.com/zune
So take a good look at your competition and what keywords you could use to incorporate in your own paid search accounts. Feel free to mix and match terms that you think will work, just be careful not to use the {Keyword:brand} dynamic feature with those trademarks!
December U.S. Search Query Market Share
This report on the December US Search Query Market Share is produced by Citigroup's Mark Mahaney.
Here is the summary from the report that came out January 15, 2007.
Summary
- comScore released last Friday its U.S. December search query data.
- U.S. search queries grew 29.7% Y/Y in December vs. 30.5% Y/Y in November. U.S. search query growth has been surprisingly sticky this past year, showing no deceleration. We would attribute this to increased search frequency by Internet users & the greater availability of Search applications.
- Google's query share increased 40 bps M/M to a record high 47.3% of the U.S. market. This market share gain continues a very consistent trend for Google.
- Yahoo!'s query share increased 30 bps M/M to reach 28.5%. The data indicate a clear stabilization in Yahoo!'s search share in '06.
- Microsoft's query share decreased 50 bps M/M to reach a record low 10.5%.
- The Ask Network's share decreased 10 bps M/M to 5.4%, roughly in line with its '06 average position. We treat the comScore data as directionally accurate, but would not read too much into any one month's results.
This seems to follow the common averages for the past quarterly trends. Google going up consistently, Yahoo! building its power base (especially with the release of its new Search Marketing tools and Panama paid search platform) and the declining of Microsoft along with the barely mentionable Ask.

Google AdWords – Click to Call Ads
New message in Google AdWords: Click to Call ads! Looks like this perhaps is the reason for the downtime they experienced on the 9th. One ponders what is coming on the scheduled Google AdWords downtime Jan 13th, 2007.
New click to call ads can put customers on the phone with you the moment they see your ad.
Make an instant connection and pay only for calls you receive.
According to the info sheet from Google, web users click an and and then enter their phone number. Then Google calls them instantly and then conference (basically) you in to the call. That is when Google charges your account for the click. The plus side is that it is not long distance at least.
I can see several draw backs with this service... if you can find some people you don't like it could be a great way to prank someone (ie. Bart vs. Moe ~ Simpsons).
Secondly, on a more practical side, it makes things harder to track conversions or ROI , which from a search marketing point of view makes management and expense tracking difficult to say the least.

eBay Updates
I know this is a little off topic from search marketing but it does deal with online marketing so I thought I would branch out a bit today. eBay is updating some of its many categories based on community feedback and experts in the category fields.
The category structure will be updated in mid-January based on feedback received from the eBay Community and from experts in the affected fields. You may provide category structure feedback at any time by clicking here.
A complete list of the new category structure can be found on Seller Central here.
This probably isn't huge news for a lot of people but it does show that online marketplaces are taking notice of sales and restructuring their interfaces after the first of the year to accommodate the things they have learned from the traumatic holiday sales rush season.
eBay also announced yesterday that they have purchased StubHub, a private (formerly now) ticket reseller market. Just in time for the football playoffs and starting the baseball season.

More Google AdWords Downtime – Jan 13th
There is a new message in Google AdWords telling everyone about more downtime for system maintenance.
On January 13, 2007, AdWords system will be unavailable from approximately 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM Pacific Time due to system maintenance. Please note that your campaigns will continue to run normally during this short downtime. We apologize for any inconvenience.
After being down all yesterday to most functions, this certainly is not happy news to online advertisers and search marketing account managers.

Yahoo Pushing to Panama
It seems like Yahoo has started giving short term deadlines for migrating accounts to the new Yahoo Search Marketing 2.0 Panama interface.
If you currently have a Yahoo! Search Marketing account and have not read up on the migration process or the changes that will happen, including the change of reporting and non-migration of past data, check on the Yahoo site for the exact changes as soon as possible. There are quite a few things you will want to know and make sure you are ready for.
If you want to migrate right away, you can submit a request to expedite the conversion process. This is not guaranteed, but it will get you in line.
You can check the new account limits, keyword, and ad text character limits here.
